Results Ladders (after round 12)
Round 8 Official Results: Elsternwick 9-0 FV1 9-0. FV2 18-117 def Alphington 0-43. HeidelbergGolf 9-0 - FV3 9-0. FV4 9-0 - BuckleyPark 9-0. What actually happened: Elsternwick 9-0 FV1 9-0. FV2 18-117 def Alphington 0-43. HeidelbergGolf 14-72 def FV3 4-70. FV4 18-15 def BuckleyPark 0-0 Highlight: This was almost a non-round which smelt like wet mongrel with rain making some greens unplayable and other games and divisions washed out (or almost washed out) but in the end it turned out to be not a bad result ... especially for the 2s and 3s. The 2s got all fired up after their bonding breakfast and did all the right things for a magnificent win over Alphington. It was touch and go whether they would keep the points when it looked like half the division was washed out, but keep the points they did. For the 3s, a washout in Div 6 turned out to be a gift of extra points. Not so great for the 1s and 4s who both missed out on a game - the 1s because the Elsternwick green was closed and the 4s, who initially got a walkover, having to be content with only 9 points because of other washouts in that division. Round 7 FV1 18-101 def Montmorency 0-57. Ivanhoe2 14-81 def FV2 4-74. FV3 2-76 def by Rosanna3 16-87. Fairfield2 18-93 def FV4 0-44.75. Highlight: It was a big day out for FV1. The prematch entertainment for FV2 at Ivanhoe was Ivanhoe's president getting a serve from our Betty (a former member there) about their club policy which allows their players a pre-game rollup but denies visiting players the same (wish I'd seen that). The 3rd side came very close to a win hitting the front with just a few ends to go but then falling over right at the last. The fours had a bit of struggle, not for lack of ability, just lack of numbers. Round 6 BundooraRSL2 14-78 def FV1 4-75. FV2 2-69 def by BundooraRSL3 16-93. DiamondCreek3 3-76 def by FV3 15-93. FV4 4-80 def Glenroy6 14-84 Highlight: It seems like Round 6 was just another day at the office with no particular stories to report apart from it being the hottest day we've had so far. The 1s and 4s had close games, the 3s made it to Diamond Creek (without going via Sydney this time) and the 2s and 4s were well catered for at home thanks to Sue and Jeni. there was one gem from Diamond Creek ... a player there recommends lining your shoes with alfoil as a layer of insulation against the heat coming off the synthetic surface. It might work... but wouldn't it make the 'zapping' that sometimes happens when you hand the bowl or kitty to someone else even worse? A job for Mythbusters? Round 5 FV1 18-102 def Toorak 0-59. Whittlesea 14-90 def FV2 4-63. FV3 18-114 def BundooraRSL6 0-57. Strathmore 5 4-68 def by FV4 14-86. Highlight: Round 5 saw the second side up at sparrows for the trek to Whittlesea. They finally arrived only to be denied a rollup as the green, a mere 2 hours before the game, was apparently not yet ready. It was a valiant effort nonetheless and the side came away with 4 points having battled swarms of bees and 98 sets of traffic lights there and back. The 4s were also away .. and had a good win with a full compliment of players. Meanwhile, at home... an inspirational pep talk by the coach preceeded handsome wins to FV1 and FV3 and I don't think anyone was sorry to see one former FV player well known in bowls circles for all the wrong reasons go away empty handed. Round 4 FV1 18-107 def Yarraville/Footscray 0-64. Eltham2 14-85 def FV2 4-65. FV3 14-83 def CityOfHeidelberg 4-82. PrincesParkC2 16-86.25 def FV4 2-58.75. Highlight: The 1s had a pretty good day out against Yarraville Footscray but once again the drama seemed to be unfolding in the 3s. Its been an arm-wrestle with City of Heidelberg across all 4 rinks all day. FV is believed to be in front by 1 but Ray Benson's rink, the last to finish, is 1 down at the head. If nothing changes it will be a draw. So the last bowl of the 84th end is in Ray Benson's hand and he considers not playing it because a draw would be better than an accidental loss if he turns another of their bowls in or moves the jack in any way. Then the scores are counted again and an accounting error is discovered ...its City of Heidelberg 82 - FV3 81. Ray has to do something to either draw or win the game..A hush descends as Ray lines up for his last bowl. And what a bowl! As Ken would say, 'Hooley Dooley!!!'. Ray's bowl zeroes in perfectly, nudges the shot bowl out and stays for 2. Confusingly Ray tears off his cap and hurls it to the ground like he's just played the worst bowl ever but he is soon swamped in well wishers. His rink goes down but they've done enough to get the side over the line for a 1 shot win. A fine example of draw bowling and how every shot counts! Round 3 Essendon2 2-70 def by FV1 16- 103. FV2 18-112 def Lalor5 0-57. Eltham4 14-84 def FV3 4-79. FV4 3-76 def by MooneeValley4 15-80. Highlight: The country side sure is pretty near Whittlesea but not what the third side really had time to look at in their quest for the Diamond Creek bowling club. Thanks for nothing google maps. Round 2 FV1 16-91 def Brighton 2-68. Montmorency3 14-84 def FV2 4-71. FV3 16-97 def Greensborough3 2-69. Sunbury6 16-78 def FV4 2-56. Highlight: Broken lock on one of the outside toilet doors creates havoc! Trapped player eventually rescued - not by the superheroes who were having a party nearby, but by the VP and the Immediate Past who, at the same time, also tried to lock a div 1 opposition player in! It was all the fun at the fair for the fourth side in Sunbury when the Sunbury show came to town ... and swallowed up all the parking spaces. Round 1 Eltham 14-83 def FV1 4-78. FV2 2-71 def by Rosanna 16-86. EastIvanhoe2 16-91 def FV3 2-56. FV4 16-81 def Doutta Galla2 2-54.5. Highlight: The Bushwackers gig. Pennant Stuff for players... Transport: If you are going direct to away games, please advise the selectors. If you can offer someone a list please make yourself known. If you need a lift, please arrange this yourself and arrive at the club in good time to get to away games. DO NOT leave messages on the member hotline - talk to a person! Practice and Commitment The first thing to know is that the selectors value and reward effort - you can't expect to be picked in your preferred position if you do not make the effort to practice and earn your spot. Tuesdays 4ish to 7ish will be for bowling drills. Because team spirit matters and knowing your teammates is important, Thursdays 5ish to 7.30ish has been set aside for practicing in your selected rink with your side. As the focus is on pennant training on Thursdays, the coaches and selectors ask that no club games are played during practice times. New players are always welcome.
